The diagram illustrates the variations in temperature zones at different altitudes between mountains in tropical and temperate climates.
Generally, tropical mountains are higher than their temperate counterparts, with a wider variety of climates and vegetation.
Tropical mountains can reach up to 5500 meters (20000 feet) in height with six temperature zones, while their temperate counterparts are twice lower, at just above 3000 meters (10000 feet) from sea-level with four temperature zones. Peaks in tropic climates have snow lines that separate permafrost from alpine meadows starting from slightly below 4500 meters (16000 feet). Broad-leaf trees also grow at a higher altitude (3000 meters) in the former compared to the latter (1200 meters).Warm areas suitable for tropical crops from the ground up to approximately 500 meters are exclusive to mountains in hotter regions, while their equivalents in temperate mountains are cool zones at 1200 meters (5000 feet) or lower for cultivation of grains, flax and potatoes. Additionally, tropical mountains can sustain a more diverse range of evergreen plants (pine, firs) and crops (grains, cocoa and coffee).

Peaks in tropic climates have snow lines that separate permafrost from alpine meadows starting from slightly below 4500 meters (16000 feet), 1.5 times higher than that of temperate mountains at 3000 meters (10000 feet). Broad-leaf trees also grow at a higher altitude (3000 meters) in the former compared to the latter (1200 meters).

Warm areas suitable for tropical crops from the ground up to approximately 500 meters are exclusive to mountains in hotter regions, while their equivalents in temperate mountains are cool zones at 1200 meters (5000 feet) or lower for cultivation of grains, flax and potatoes. Additionally, tropical mountains can sustain a more diverse range of evergreen plants (pine, firs) and crops (grains, cocoa and coffee).
