The pie chart shows the percentage of nutrients including sodium, saturated fat and added sugar in an average American’s daily meal. All of which can have adverse health effects if consumed in excess.

Overall, there are clear differences in the amount of each nutrient in meals throughout the day. There is a considerable amount of sodium and saturated fat in dinners, while added sugar is most prevalent in snacks. Meanwhile, breakfast is the healthiest meal, which contains the least amount of salt, oil and sugar.

From the chart, it can be seen that of all three nutrients, sodium has the highest proportion in dinner, with 43%, three times higher than snacks and breakfast. Also in dinner, saturated fat has the second highest percentage with 37% which is twice as much as fat in breakfast.

Added sugar composes nearly half of snacks’ nutritional value at 42%, approximately three times more than sugar in breakfast. On the contrary, breakfast contains relatively low percentages of these potentially harmful nutrients, at 14%, 16%, 16% for salt, sugar and fat respectively.
